Trans-Atlantic passengers will need to get used to longer flight times and higher ticket prices as climate change takes its toll on the high altitude jet streams which blow west to east over the Atlantic. Climate change is making the jet streams faster, which will in turn be harder for planes to fly against, thus slowing them down and causing an increase in aviation fuel used. It is estimated that the quickening jet streams and slower flying times, on the approximately 300 trans-Atlantic flights per day, will mean an extra 70million kilograms of CO2 will be emitted into the atmosphere annually.
